PAVE hosts ‘The Feminization of HIV/AIDS’
In light of World AIDS Week, PAVE held a workshop titled “The Feminization of HIV/AIDS,” which explored the relationship between the spread of HIV/AIDS and sexual violence. Sam Johnson and Jayne Jones—PAVE’s peer facilitators—led the event.
The discussion centered mainly on the global prevalence of HIV/AIDS, but both speakers stressed the fact that it held implications for students at UW-Madison as well.
“We just want to challenge you to think about the ways in which the systematic forces we’re going to be talking about do apply to students on this campus,” Johnson said.

A need for first-year ed at UW-Madison
This week, one of UW-Madison’s independent student newspapers, The Badger Herald, invited us to take part in several meetings of their editorial board. At said meetings, we discussed the importance of primary prevention on college campuses, specifically the need for first-year violence prevention education, which has been proven to reduce sexual assault rates. The finished piece appears in today’s paper, but I’ve also included the text below. Thanks to The Badger Herald for partnering with us to help end sexual assault on the UW-Madison campus.
Pop quiz: What group or department comes to mind when someone asks you about sexual assault education and prevention on campus?
You likely answered Promoting Awareness, Victim Empowerment. Or maybe Sex Out Loud. But there is one answer you did not give — a university-funded administrative department dedicated to ending sexual assault on campus. That is because we are the only school in the Big Ten that does not have one.
