A call for a new PAVE chair!

Each year around this time, PAVE elects the chair for the following academic year. The chair works to hire the nine remaining student staff positions for the upcoming academic year, trains that staff and oversees each staff person on their projects to ensure that everything we do fits in with our mission statement.

Anyone who will be a student for the entire 2012-2013 academic year is eligible to run, regardless of how much or how little you might have been involved with PAVE in the past. Candidate’s statements will be emailed out to the eligible voters on Monday, April 9, votes will be collected in the meantime and the PAVE chair for 2012-’13 will likely be announced on Tuesday, April 17.

A CALL FOR CANDIDATES:

If you are interested in running in the election to be the next PAVE chair, please email a personal statement up to 300 words (including why you want to be chair and what you think you’ll bring to PAVE) to Val Kowis at uwpavechair@gmail.com by Friday, April 6 no later than 5:00 p.m.

Emergency phones and lights not the answer to sexual assault prevention at UW-Madison

Last Tuesday, The Badger Herald ran an editorial calling on Madison and University of Wisconsin Police to install more lights and emergency telephones throughout campus as to lower the prevalence of sexual assault and ultimately make UW-Madison a safer place.

First of all, it is encouraging to see students, including the editorial’s author, Christin Wiegand, recognize sexual assault as a problem in our community. Indeed it is, and students and campus members should be doing everything in their power to help the crime’s frequency go down.

Having said that, it is important to note that lights and emergency phones are not what will eradicate sexual assault in this community. One in four women will be victims of rape or attempted rape throughout their time in college, with 75-90 percent of the crime’s perpetrators being someone the victim knows. While lights and phones can be good safeguards against stranger assault, they are not as useful in preventing acquaintance rape, the more common form on campus.
